Dorothy Dalgliesh School

Learning Outcomes for Grade 1 Mathematics

Strand: Patterns and Relations - Variables and Equations

General Outcome: Represent algebraic expressions in multiple ways.

4. Describe equality as a balance and inequality as an imbalance, concretely and pictorially (0 to 20).

  • I can make two sets of the same objects and show they are equal by using a balance scale. If the arms are level, the sets are equal. I can use my arms to show this. I can then draw this.
  • I can make two sets of the same objects and show they are not equal by using a balance scale. If the arms are not level, the sets are not equal. I can use my arms to show this. I can then draw this.
  • I can show on a balance scale if two given sets are equal or not equal.

5. Record equalities,

using the equal symbol.

  • I can print a number sentence using an equal sign.
